Welcome to the Malta Kendo Institute: home for the development of quality kendo in the Maltese islands, reputed with the most qualified dan kendo players in Malta. With seminars organized regularly, visits by foreign sensei’s and trips to the UK, students have the opportunity to develop their true ability as a quality kendo player.
We not only teach a sport, but also how to face adversity!!
Kendo the way of the sword embodies the essence of the Japanese Samurai fighting arts, spiritualism and philosophical Zen way of life.
Kendo in Malta?? then you have come to the right place!!
Kendo has many benefits including aerobic training, meditation in motion and zen understanding. Through regular practice one will see improvement in their general health, frame of mind and the ability to destress from everyday tension, character development, spiritual and philosophical development which lead to a better life style. One will also develop the insight on how to face daily challenges and adopt for practical solutions. Kendo students see an improvement in their daily lives, be it an increase in their school grades, a promotion on the job, the will to stay calm and mentally focused when sittingfor an exam or job interview, or as managers in positions of responsability and decision making roles. Kendo provides a way of strengthening character, one's will to face a situation and act upon it with a calm and steady mind. In our kendo practice we are always encouraging each other to go beyond our abilities. Beginners start off slowly with an introductory course into understanding the history of how kendo evolved, with the first lesson focusing on basics and dojo etiquette. The first 12 weeks are set out so that one may progress at their own pass, making them feel welcome and comfortable to their first steps of understanding the way of the sword. The second lesson beginners will focus on foot work, how to hold a sword and how to yield it. From there one moves into fundametal sword kata, which later will translate into use with shinai.
Kendo is for all, any one of any age or sex, and our practice sessions are always open to guests to come and be part of our fun and friendly club. Any one can practice Kendo as the lessons are by a qualified 3rd Dan Kendo Instructor, and are done in an easy to follow and fun way. The members are all friendly and will make you feel as part of the club.
& most importantly - KENDO IS FUN! extremely good fun in a way that it must be practiced to understand why!! THERE IS MORE TO KENDO THAN MEETS THE EYE, AS KENDO IS AN ART FORM THAT REQUIRES MENTAL AND SPRIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT, & PHYSICAL AGILITY.
Our core training is dedicated to fundamental kendo, with a healthy balance in the study of kata and shinai practice. Students take their first steps in kendo by studying Kihon Keiko Ho with a bokken (wooden sword), then the same kata is practiced with shinai ( the bamboo sword / bamboo blade). Next in line is tenouchi excercises and before you know in a few months one will easily find themselves practicing in armour. Which this club has plenty of so no one needs to spend money until they feel that they are ready to make a further commitment. That is the philosphy and apporach to this club teaching kendo in Malta!
The club lesson and syllabus are integrated so that no matter the level you will always take part in the practice. At the Malta Kendo Institute, men & women of different ages attend and we practice safety and respect towards each other.
In fact two other Kendo clubs have mushroomed from the Malta Kendo Institute - the University Kendo Club (Degree Plus Program) and the MCAST Kendo Club.
To kendo there is more than just the physical, there is also the philosophical, spiritual and cultural aspects which we practice. Lessons are Saturday’s at 13.30 to 3.30pm in Mriehel St Theresa School (opposite the Birkirkara Football nursery), and Tuesday from 7.15pm to 9.00pm in the Corradino Hill Upper Gym. A lift may be provided if it’s en route.
So do accept our invitation to visit,
We look forward to see you in person,
Kind regards,
